Mangiamo Italiano began as a humble dream in the picturesque village of Sorrento, Italy in 1947. It was there, amid the sun-kissed lemon groves and cobblestone streets, that our founder, Giovanni Russo, cultivated his passion for authentic Italian cuisine. Born and raised in Sorrento, Giovanni was surrounded by the rich traditions and flavors of Italian cooking from a young age where he developed his passion during moments spent with his grandmother in the kitchen crafting sacred family recipes. After serving in the war, Giovanni returned home to Sorrento where he opened the original Mangiamo Italiano Ristorante, it was here where he raised his family and served his community for twenty-seven years. But fate had other plans and in 1974 Giovanni was forced to sell his restaurant in Sorrento. He packed up his family and embarked on a journey across the Atlantic Ocean, bringing his culinary expertise and the heart of Italy with him, where he and his family eventually came to settle in Vancouver, Canada. They struggled for a few years to find their place, but Giovanni was fervently determined to keep his dream alive. And at last in 1976, in the busy downtown streets of Vancouver, Giovanni was fortunate enough to open the doors of Mangiamo Italiano once again and introduce the true essence of Italian dining to the people of Vancouver. Giovanni Russo, my grandfather, passed away in 2012, but his legacy lives on. The family restaurant has been passed down through generations where it still stands today serving countless families, friends, and loved ones, celebrating and creating lasting memories for all.
